Ysgol Bro Caereinion welcomes findings of Estyn inspection

Ysgol Bro Caereinion has welcomed its first inspection report from Estyn, which praises the warm and caring ethos of the school and the exemplary manner in which pupils behave.

The report said that pupils “behave very well in lessons and around the school and engage positively in their learning” and stated that “nearly all pupils behave in an exemplary manner and are respectful and polite on their interaction with staff and each other.” They noted that attendance is much higher than that of similar schools and highlighted that the school promotes the importance of respecting diversity and that staff provide valuable extra-curricular activities.

Inspectors particularly praised the school’s approach to supporting pupils’ emotional, physical, mental health and wellbeing. Support for pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) is a strength of the school. It states, “staff understand pupils’ barriers to success well and pupils benefit from helpful interventions for their academic and social needs.”

There is recognition that “leaders work enthusiastically to establish working practices to enable a new all age school to succeed” and “maintain positive working relations to ensue and this of teamwork.”

Inspectors praised the primary phase, noting the quality of teaching as “good nearly all the time” and that “staff provide interesting activities that develop pupils’ curiosity as independent learners well.” In the secondary phase, they noted that teachers share their “subject knowledge effectively.”

The inspectors highlighted four recommendations around addressing safeguarding issues specifically to the site; for leaders to operate strategically and establish a clear vision for the school; strengthen self-evaluation and improvement planning and to improve the provision for the progressive development of pupils’ skills.

Mr. Huw Lloyd–Jones, Head of Ysgol Bro Caereinion said, “We welcome the findings of this report. I am pleased that the inspection team found Ysgol Bro Caereinon providing a high level of support and guidance for its pupils underpinned by a warm and caring ethos.”

“For a school that has only recently been operating as an all-age school, it is heartening that Estyn recognises the many strengths of Ysgol Bro Caereinion, in particular around pupils’ behaviour and attitudes to learning and wellbeing.”

Cllr. Gareth Jones, Chair of Ysgol Bro Caereinion Governors said, “We recognise it’s been a challenging time for the whole school community. We now look forward to develop further the shared vision for Ysgol Bro Caereinion.”

"I would like to thank pupils, staff and parents/carers for their support and I am proud that the Inspectors highlighted pupils behaviour and politeness as a key strength of the school.”

“The school is already acting on the recommendations identified by Estyn and we are already working with stakeholders to address all, including the safeguarding issues relating to the safety of site.”

Inspectors noted that governors are “very supportive of the school and carry out their roles enthusiastically by offering an appropriate level of challenge” and have “a good grasp of the areas in need of improvement”.

Estyn inspectors visited the school in April 2024. They met with all stakeholders as part of their four-day inspection.
